O sons and daughters of Adam! Your happiness hinges upon following the Prophetʼs guidance. With the sending of the Prophet (bpuh) to humankind, the doors of paradise were opened for the followers of his religion, the defenders of his message, and the supporters of his principles.
O people! The Prophet (bpuh) will continue to live among you through his Sunnah and good example. In your gatherings, his words will speak to you as long as you want them to – as long as you want to study his sayings and deeds.
O Muslims! O believers! O slaves of Allah! You have the ability to make the teachings of the Messenger (bpuh) live with you at all times, anywhere – on a plane, in a car, on a ship, in your home, in a garden, in the marketplace, in your office, or in your classroom. You can make his memory live with you if you remember to send prayers upon him and if you follow his guidance.
You can also include his example in your life by hearing an account of his biography on an audio recording, by reading one of the many biographies that have been written about him – or, even better, by reading about him in the noble Qur’an. You can live with his teachings in this way even if you are poor, for he was the ʻchief of poor people’. If you are rich, though, having both children and
wealth, thank Allah and know that when the Prophet (bpuh) became rich, he expressed his gratitude to Allah and spent all he had on charitable causes.
If you gain victory over falsehood, do not become arrogant and do not adopt an air of self-importance. Remember the time when the Messenger (bpuh) achieved victory over his enemies; he lowered his head in humility to Allah and his eyes shed tears. If your enemy defeats you, remain patient and calm, all the while remembering how, when faced with defeat, the Prophet (bpuh) was patient and calm for the sake of Allah. If a loved one dies, be patient, keeping focused on the thought that by being patient you will receive your rewards from Allah. This was the attitude of the Prophet (bpuh) when he lost Ibrâheem, the most beloved of his sons. In these ways, with the right frame of mind and the right intention, you can make the Messengerʼs wisdom live with you at all times.
People are deprived of the Messenger’s guidance the day:
● they abandon his Sunnah,
● they abandon the recitation of the noble Qur’an, filling its spot on their bookshelf with lewd magazines,
● beneficial Islamic lectures are removed from their CD rack and are replaced with unlawful music,
● they abandon lawful sustenance, turning instead to sustenance that is derived from usury or other unlawful means,
● they abandon the five daily prayers, or
● they reject the Sunnah in their appearance and choice of clothing.
These are sad longings of love that I wrote after my heart filled with remembrance of the Prophet (bpuh), in the hope that a study of his biography would motivate us to follow his guidance. I ask Allah to guide us to follow the Prophet’s Sunnah and to make us his followers both in this life and in the hereafter.
